Hànfú(汉服), also known as Huáfú(华服), refers to the traditional clothing worn by the Han people—the main ethnic group in the Central Plains—across different historical periods over a 4,000-year span. This span ranges from the era of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors (roughly the late Neolithic Age to the early Bronze Age, before 2000 BCE) to the end of the Ming Dynasty (roughly the 17th century CE). It is not a single fixed style, but a comprehensive clothing system that carries Han ethnic cultural characteristics and evolved with the times.

Among the many typical elements of Hanfu, "cross-collar with right overlap" and "upper ru (short jacket) with lower skirt" are highly representative core symbols. "Cross-collar with right overlap" means the collars of the clothing cross each other, with the left collar overlapping part of the right collar, forming a shape similar to the letter "y". This style remained stable throughout the development of Hanfu and is an important marker to distinguish Hanfu from the clothing of other ethnic groups. "Upper ru with lower skirt" is a classic wearing style that took shape in the early stages of Hanfu. The "ru" is a short-sleeved upper garment, and the "skirt" is a wrap-around lower garment. The combination of the two not only met the daily needs of ancient life but also gradually evolved into a basic style that embodies the aesthetic of Han ethnic clothing.

Product

Washing
Hanfu garments are often delicate, especially those with embroidery. Handwashing is recommended.
If you prefer to use a washing machine, choose the gentlest cycle and place the Hanfu in a laundry bag for added protection.
After washing, air-dry indoors in a well-ventilated area.Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause color fading.
Storage
Store your Hanfu in breathable garment bags to keep it clean and
protected.
Avoid hanging for long periods, as this can stretch or distort the fabric.
Instead, gently fold your Hanfu and store it flat or stack it neatly in a storage box or drawer.

Currently, the market leader in the Hanfu circle is Tang Dynasty Hanfu, followed by Ming Dynasty Hanfu and Song Dynasty Hanfu. Behind them are strong competitors and rising stars such as Wei-Jin and Qin-Han dynasties' Hanfu.
Of course, this is just the current trend. Some people actually prefer Hanfu from more "obscure" dynasties. For example, I’m really into Wei-Jin Dynasty Hanfu. When it comes to choosing a type of Hanfu, I think the only thing that matters is that you like it.

First, let me tell you the answer,Ming Dynasty Hanfu is the best choice for a wedding dress because it's backed by royal tradition, uses a lucky red color, and its structure is very practical. A carefully adjusted Song Dynasty style is better for brides wanting a very simple, cultural feel or something more uniquely personal.
1. Ming Dynasty Hanfu (Top Recommendation)
Historical Accuracy & Cultural Authority:
Ming wedding outfits were well-established. The combination of a gold-woven horse-face skirt with a bright red wide-sleeved robe or a standing-collar long jacket is recorded in official Ming Dynasty records. Real examples found in royal tombs confirm they used true red fabric and gold-thread weaving. This color symbolizes good luck in Chinese tradition and follows royal customs, making it widely accepted culturally.
Practicality for Weddings:
The structure of the horse-face skirt works perfectly with a fluffy petticoat (you can add a sheer overlay for a dreamy look). The standing collar makes it easy to wear jewelry. Right now, about 70% of the Chinese wedding market chooses Ming-style Hanfu because its design easily blends with Western tailoring (like modified corset-like support). It offers both traditional ceremony and comfort for moving around.
2. Song Dynasty Hanfu (Needs Adjustment for Personal Style)
Style Features & Smart Changes:
Song styles preferred blue-green colors ("men wore red, women wore green"). The classic look with a large-sleeved gown, pleated skirt, and decorative stole (xiapei) is elegant but uses colors less common in modern weddings.
Adjustment Plan:
Use a bright red horse-face skirt (which appeared by the late Song) for the bottom layer. Pair it with a heavily embroidered large-sleeved gown. Boost the formality with very fancy accessories like the decorative stole (xiapei), gold-plated phoenix crown, and lots of pearl decorations. This balances the simpler base style with luxurious details.
Key Advice
Go for Ming Style:
Focus on high-quality fabric (like silk or gold-woven satin) for a truly luxurious look.
Consider Song Style Carefully:
You must strictly follow the historical design. Use very high-end, showy accessories to make it feel grand enough for a wedding.

Absolutely! Hanfu is warmly welcomed to be worn and appreciated by everyone, regardless of cultural background.
Why It's Encouraged:
1、Cultural Appreciation, Not Appropriation
Hanfu embodies 4,000 years of Chinese aesthetic philosophy. Wearing it respectfully honors its history, much like wearing a kimono or sari celebrates Japanese or Indian heritage. Global enthusiasts help preserve this intangible cultural heritage.
2、Historical Openness
Silk Road exchanges show China historically shared clothing aesthetics (e.g., influences on Korean hanbok and Japanese kimono). Modern cultural exchange continues this tradition.
3、Modern Revival Movement
The global #HanfuRenaissance thrives on diverse participation. Communities in New York, Paris, and Tokyo host inclusive Hanfu events, celebrating cross-cultural dialogue.
