Important Notes

Washing
*Hanfu garments are often delicate, especially those with embroidery. Handwashing is recommended.
*If you prefer to use a washing machine, choose the gentlest cycle and place the Hanfu in a laundry bag for added protection.
*After washing, air-dry indoors in a well-ventilated area.Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause color fading.
Storage
*Store your Hanfu in breathable garment bags to keep it clean and protected.
*Avoid hanging for long periods, as this can stretch or distort the fabric.
*Instead, gently fold your Hanfu and store it flat or stack it neatly in a storage box or drawer.

This Mawangdui-reconstructed Quju robe traces its design directly to the Warring States shenyi (deep robe), adhering strictly to the ritual norms of Qin-Han court attire. Crafted from imitation Xiangyunsha Silk, it balances skin-friendly breathability with a gently draping texture. The robe features a tri-color combination of red, black, and pure white — a color scheme rooted in the ceremonial dress of noblewomen in the Qin and Han dynasties: the contrast of red and black conveys solemnity, while the white trim softens the richness, embodying the classical aesthetic of “harmony in diversity”. Subtle jacquard vine-and-cloud motifs adorn the red fabric, symbolizing “eternal vitality and divine connection through clouds” — a reflection of the Qin-Han era’s reverence for auspiciousness. The continuous white trimming, extending from the cross-collar to the hem, not only visually emphasizes the curved-jacket’s structural trait of “extended lapels with hooked edges” but also highlights the delicate layering of the robe’s patterns with its understated lines. The robe’s dignified silhouette naturally endows the wearer with an air of scholarly elegance.

Notice:
1.This is a custom - made style. It will be dispatched 4 weeks after the order is placed. If you have any questions, please contact us.
2.The set includes: a quju robe + an inner garment + a white underskirt.

Please note that the pattern print is not fixed, the position will be random and differ from the product images.

Archaeological Evidence & Evolution of Qin-Han Robes

I. Form Evolution: From Warring States "Shenyi" to Qin-Han Robes

  1. Warring States Shenyi (Source)
Represented by the No.15 Brocade Robe (Mashan Chu Tomb, Jiangling, Hubei), it featured a cross-collar with right overlap and Quju wrapping (forming triangular "extended lapel hooks"). Made by joining separate upper/lower parts, it was full-coverage but impractical for movement—only for rituals.
  2. Qin-Han Robe Differentiation
    • Quju robes (Early Western Han mainstream): Inherited wrap-around design (e.g., Scarlet Rhombus-patterned Gauze Robe, Mawangdui Tomb) with flared hems. Worn in 3 layers (outer curved, middle straight, inner unlined) as noble ceremonial attire.
    • Zhiju robes (Eastern Han mainstream): Vertically cut (e.g., Plain Gauze Robe, Mawangdui Tomb). Popularized after crotch trousers spread (no need to cover lower body), becoming daily wear for officials/commoners and even court attire.

II. Fabric Upgrades: Silk/Linen Tech & Class Gaps

  1. Tech & Materials
    • Silk: Mawangdui’s Plain Gauze Robe weighed 49g (12g/sq.m), with silk 30% finer than modern silkworms. Brocades used "four-harness warp weave" (e.g., geometric pile brocade)—exclusive to nobles.
    • Linen: Mawangdui linen had 37 threads/cm (near modern fine linen). Zhou’s ban on "trading embroidered silks" was lifted; merchants/servants could wear trimmed silk shoes.
  2. Class-Based Attire
    • Nobles: Lady Xin Zhui’s (Mawangdui) Scarlet Rhombus-patterned Robe (cinnabar-dyed, pile brocade trim).
    • Qin soldiers: Short Zhiju robes (under armor)—balanced ritual and practicality.

III. Ritual Symbol: "Cross-Collar with Right Overlap"

  1. Cultural Marker
The Book of Rites emphasized "right-overlap = orthodox"; Han Dynasty saw left-overlap collars as "barbarian" (Xiongnu, Xianbei). Evidence (Mawangdui figurines, Qin terracotta) confirms right-overlap as core of Huaxia attire.
  2. Straight-Lapel Popularity Logic
It reflected a shift from "ritual priority" to "practicality": With crotch trousers, straight-lapel robes suited daily use—officials wore black-trimmed court versions, commoners wore short-lapel styles, covering "court to marketplace".

Conclusion

Qin-Han robes combined form differentiation (Quju-curved for ritual, Zhiju-straight for convenience), fabric stratification (silk/brocade for nobles, linen for commoners), and symbol unification (right-overlap collars). They turned Warring States’ ritual "shenyi" into universal attire—from Mawangdui’s gauze robes to Eastern Han stone-carved "Chanyu court robes", embodying "governing via ritual attire" and becoming a core Chinese clothing gene.
