Practically, hairpins were essential for women with long hair: they secured tresses firmly, kept hairstyles neat and in place, and ensured comfort throughout the day. This functional role made hairpins a daily necessity for women in ancient and traditional Chinese societies.What Does a Hairpin Represent?
Socially, hairpins carried significant symbolic weight. For women, certain styles of hairpins often indicated marital status; in some historical periods, a married woman would wear a specific hairpin to signal her status. Hairpins also reflected one’s social standing: nobles favored elaborate hairpins crafted from precious materials like jade, gold, or silver, while commoners used simpler hairpins made of wood or bamboo—each hairpin telling a story of its wearer’s background.What Does a Hairpin Symbolize in Love?
Most notably, hairpins were widely used as tokens of affection between lovers. In traditional Chinese culture, lovers often gave each other a hairpin as a symbol of their commitment, or to express deep affection that words could not fully convey. A famous example comes from The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, a classic poem by Bai Juyi, a renowned poet of the Tang Dynasty. The poem includes a line about a hairpin: “I can only send old keepsakes to show my deep affection—sending you the inlaid box and the golden hairpin.” This line describes how Yang Guifei (Imperial Concubine Yang), in the celestial realm, gave a golden hairpin (and other keepsakes) to a Taoist priest, asking him to bring the hairpin back to Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. Through this golden hairpin, she expressed her unwavering love for the emperor, and the hairpin itself became a symbol of their once-beautiful, eternal love. Such a hairpin, given as a token, was always cherished as a precious memento, carrying profound emotional value for both giver and receiver.What Other Symbolic Meanings Does a Hairpin Have?
There’s another lovely cultural association with hairpins in China: the Chinese word for “hairpin” (钗，chā) has a similar pronunciation to the word for “wealth” (财，cái). For this reason, many people believe hairpins implicitly carry the auspicious meaning of “attracting wealth” or “bringing good fortune”—adding another layer of charm to this timeless accessory.Share

*After washing, air-dry indoors in a well-ventilated area.Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause color fading.
Storage
*Store your Hanfu in breathable garment bags to keep it clean and protected.
*Avoid hanging for long periods, as this can stretch or distort the fabric.
*Instead, gently fold your Hanfu and store it flat or stack it neatly in a storage box or drawer.

Once your order has been dispatched, we cannot cancel, modify your order.

Customs Duties & Taxes
Please note that any customs fees, duties, or taxes imposed by your country are not included. These charges are determined by local customs authorities and are beyond our control.
In the event that customs duties are declined at the time of delivery, the package is returned to us, please note that no refunds or cancellations will be provided. This is due to penalty charges imposed by the courier for the return shipment.
Notice for U.S. Customers – New Customs Duty Policy Starting May 2nd
- From May 2nd, 2025 onwards, all shipments entering the U.S. may incur customs duties. Recipients must pay any applicable duties before delivery can proceed.
- Orders shipped before May 2nd are not guaranteed to arrive in the U.S. before the deadline. If they arrive after May 2nd, duties may still apply.
- If customs duties are refused by the recipient, the package will be returned to China, and unfortunately, no refunds or cancellations will be provided due to penalties charged by the courier.
- Some items may be shipped from Singapore, but please note that we cannot guarantee exemption from customs duties. If you would like your order to be shipped from Singapore, please contact us in advance to confirm.
