The Song Dynasty (960 AD–1279 AD) was a period of unparalleled prosperity in culture and economy in Chinese history. It was divided into two stages: the Northern Song Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty, lasting for 319 years. Yue Fei was a very famous national hero during this period.
Influenced by Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism culture, the Hanfu in the Song Dynasty developed a unique style characterized by simplicity and elegance. Compared with the bold and avant-garde Hanfu of the Tang Dynasty, the Hanfu in the Song Dynasty was more plain, simple, and conservative.
Women in the Song Dynasty often wore long robes with straight collars and narrow sleeves, as well as beizi (a kind of loose outer garment). These robes and beizi were made of various materials, such as silk and cotton, demonstrating the advancement of textile technology at that time. Their understated designs showed the Song Dynasty's pursuit of elegance. In addition, the Ruqun set was also popular among women in the Song Dynasty. It consisted of a short upper garment (ru) paired with a long skirt. The colors were usually soft and harmonious, enhancing the gentle beauty of women. Accessories like silk scarves added a touch of refinement.
The clothing of the Song Dynasty not only met daily needs but also embodied traditional Chinese values. It is an important chapter in the long history of Chinese traditional clothing and still influences fashion trends even today.
