2. Exchange Policy 

If your item doesn't fit perfectly, we offer an exchange policy to help you get the right size. Please note that exchanges are only processed after we receive and inspect your returned item. 


  1. Eligibility: Items must be returned in their original packaging, unworn, unwashed, and in perfect, resalable condition (free of makeup, perfume, or pet hair). 

  2. Timeframe: You must contact us at jianxihanfu@gmail.com within 3 days of receiving the item to request an exchange.

Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, boots—integrated into Hanfu culture via the eastward spread of Hu clothing—gradually became a core staple for officials and nobles, forming rigorous matching norms with Hanfu (including ritual and daily attire).

In these dynasties, Hanfu inherited the crown-and-robe system while absorbing Hu clothing’s simplicity; styles like round-collar robes grew popular among the elite. Initially, boot types (flat/pointed-toed, high/low-calf) and colors were unrestricted (reflecting the era’s “inclusive” sartorial culture). Yet as etiquette/hierarchy strengthened and Hanfu’s color/silhouette norms refined, a footwear culture centered on zaoxue (black boots, “zao” = black) took shape.

Black symbolized solemnity in ancient ritual color symbolism, suiting Sui-Tang official robe rules (part of Hanfu). For example, the Tang “rank-based color robe system” had officials wear purple/crimson/green/cyan round-collar robes with uniform black zaoxue—distinguishing ranks via robe colors while ensuring solemnity, balancing “vibrant robes and solemn boots” for court/social events.

Records note “Boots for court audiences all had pointed toes.” Such pointed-toed official boots (predecessor of Tang “six-panel boots”) complemented Hanfu’s slender, often floor-length robes. Hidden under hems, they kept delicacy and boosted ritual significance—used only in formal occasions (like court audiences) and paired with ritual Hanfu (e.g., Tongtian Crown attire, Yishan Crown attire) to form a complete system. This turned official boots into ritual symbols (not just practical wear), solidified their concept, and extended Hanfu’s etiquette matching to the feet, building a more rigorous sartorial system.

Hanfu Boots Zao Xue Material

Fabric & Wash

Material: Canvas, Cotton Cloth, Rubber, Pearl, Rhinestone

Hand-wash Only with your hanfu shoes & boots as most hanfu shoes are handmade. Following these basic cleaning steps will ensure clean the shoes and won’t break:

  1. Mix warm water with a small amount of mild laundry detergent or dish soap, you can also mix some baking soda.
  2. Remove the shoelaces and apply a small amount of the mild cleaning solution to them. Massage the laces with your hands, rinse, then dab dry with a soft cloth.
  3. Use the mild solution and a soft-bristled brush, toothbrush, or a soft damp cloth to clean the uppers. Take your time and don’t scrub too hard.
  4. Clean the outsole and midsole thoroughly, taking your time to clean every part of the soles.
  5. When you’re satisfied with the look, use a dry microfiber towel or soft cloth to blot and lift as much soapy moisture and dirt as possible. Repeat if necessary.
  6. Air dry your sneakers at room temperature.
