Song Dynasty (960–1279) Women's Clothing: A Paradigm of Elegant Simplicity in Traditional Chinese Fashion

Women's attire in the Song Dynasty is defined by understated elegance and restrained grace. Shaped by Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism’s emphasis on modesty and rationality, it rejected the Tang Dynasty’s flamboyant extravagance, prioritizing structural neatness and functionality.

Core styles encompass Beizi (a loose outer robe), Ruqun (a two-piece ensemble of a short top and pleated skirt), Moxiong (a form-fitting chest wrap), and Song trousers. The Beizi features a straight collar, front opening (either untied or fastened with ties), and knee-length cut, serving both daily and ceremonial purposes. The Ruqun pairs a cropped Ru with a flowing pleated skirt, while Song trousers—crafted in two panels—offer breathability for everyday movements.

Fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk dominated, with techniques such as subtle embroidery and dyeing favored over ostentation. Fabric & Wash
Material: Polyester Recommend Hand-wash with your favorite mild detergent; Cold or warm water, maximum temperature 25°C. When washed, shake off any excess water and let them air dry. (Alternate: washing machine – put clothes into a soft mesh wash bag and run with gentle cycle).
